Podcasts.. Just Don’t Do It For Me

Not updated this in a while…

Was just something I was thinking about really. It seems podcasts are more popular than ever at the moment, a lot of TV shows (at least, UK television) advertise their ‘podcast’ at the end of each show, and a lot of fringe celebritys put them out, maybe some attempt to boost their popularity. And reading a topic on RSBANDB made me think.. I don’t really like listening to podcasts. No matter what it’s about, whether it’s a subject I find completely gripping or utterly boring, I will find myself incompatible with the podcast for it in equal measure. I just can’t sit down and listen to somebody talk about something for an extended period of time. Why? I don’t know. I’m perfectly fine with listening to the radio in the background, or even the television. But when it comes to podcasts.. I just.. can’t be bothered. I suspect it may be something to do with the fact that normally when listening to a podcast you do have to devote a certain level of attention to it, and when I am at the computer I will normally be devoting attention to other things, and thus.. not have any spare for a podcast.

I have tried listening to them, I even listen to the odd episode of Diggnation, and if I was absent that particular week, RSBANDBUpdate!. But even when I listen to those, I’d say I miss more than 50% of what’s being said because I simply can’t hold my attention span to it for long enough. I can’t exactly put my finger on what it is, but no matter what it may be about, or how interesting and engrossing it may be, I just can’t listen to podcasts.

On a slightly related note I also forget a lot of things people say to me, frequently. Maybe the two are linked.. XD

  1. I’m the same. With the few RSBANDB Updates! I have listened to I’ve ended up having to go back in each one since I’ve been too busy doing other things on the computer.

  2. Same here. If a podcast is more than 10 min it is a stretch for me. I prefer to listen to a series of short podcasts making breaks in between to do other staff instead of one big podcast that flows and flows.

  3. I used to have the same problem, but after listening to a lot of podcasts and radio shows, I had to sort of train myself to pay attention to information better. I guess TV has ruined us all in a way. We’re so spoiled when it comes to TV. We have a moving picture that accompanies sound and it makes us unable to really actively absorb information from any other medium.

  4. I can’t hold my attention long enough on any podcast besides RU! which I still drift off every now and then, but I’m guessing it has something to do with the fact that I know the people who are presenting it. I never really used to have a major connection back in the day, which could have been why I stopped listening to it, but now I eagerly await every week’s podcast. Even if I miss half of what is being said.

    Except this week. Bloody priceless.

  5. I manage to listen to Rsbandb Update easily and through the whole episode when i do my homework. (Lol) if im playing rs, i forget about what was said, mostly cuz im talking to friends or skilling, or something. I can see how podcasts could get boring after a while, but since u guys pop off with jokes or funny comments randomly, i stay interested.
